Using Vintage Linens for Upholstery, Curtains and Blinds

At Beyond France we are regularly asked 'what can the linen be used for?' Or 'I want to make some linen chair covers and linen curtains, do you have anything suitable?'

Whether you're looking for vintage linen to reupholster a sofa or chair or to make your own linen curtains, blinds, reupholstering sofas or chairs there are lots of different options and combinations of linen that are suitable.

If you already have an upholstery or curtain project to discuss, please ensure you have the necessary measurements to hand. For example if you wish to upholster an armchair, simply measure the height, depth and width of the chair. For linen curtains and blinds, measure the window length and width. We usually find a drawing can be very helpful too - especially with chairs!

As we will be working with vintage linen fabric, the measurements are different to modern upholstery fabric. This means that the quantity of fabric quoted by an upholsterer may not be relevant. For example, a quote for 7 metres of 1.4m wide fabric isn't applicable when we can mix and match grain sacks, mattress covers and cart covers that are all different lengths and widths.

Sewing linen dining chair cushions?

When making dining or kitchen chair cushions using vintage linen grain sacks, we suggest you back the cushions with an old bed sheet

This makes the vintage linen fabric go further and is much more ecomomical - you can even reuse old feather pillows and cushions to make the seat pads.

Vintage linen is ideal for outdoor chair seat cushions because the linen is hard wearing and machine washable at high temperatures. This means you need not fret about grass stains or accidental wine spillages - spray with stain remover and pop the cover in the washing machine!
